These two kids nearly broke my heart into a million pieces today! Ellie looks at my lunch and tells me that she thinks she would like cottage cheese. I'm always ready in these situations to have a "teachable moment" about why she and Zay can't eat protein because they have PKU. Zay is so good at this! He always speaks up that they can't eat this or that because they have PKU. However today, Zay went on with his explanation, telling Ellie that once they grew as tall as mommy and daddy then they would be able to eat the food that we eat. And he further thought that we had PKU when we were little like him and Ellie. :( We had to have a great big heart-to-heart discussion answering hard questions like "but mommy, why did God make me this way?". And correcting his assumption of eating like mommy and daddy someday. And how we need to be praying that one day there would be a cure for PKU so they can eat like mommy and daddy... Hard stuff for this mama's heart. I always say... I'm so thankful that PKU only involves food, but WHY does food have to be everywhere and a part of everything!? A constant reminder to my kids that they are different and have this thing called PKU. However, I can confidently say that today was great reminder to me that by the grace of God we will do our very best to answer these tough questions for our Zay-man and Elle-Belle...helping them understand just how special and loved they are! One hard conversation down...dozens more to go! ;) #pku

Becoming a photographer so I could take pictures of my own kids is pretty much the funniest thing I ever told myself! I mean... these photos are worth it, but it's exhausting to be the parent and the photographer!!! You should have seen the antics I was doing to get genuine smiles! And I only half-way edited their photos, but still posted them because they are cute enough with out the edits!! :) #yagetwhatyaget

We cleaned the garage this weekend, and part of the process was going thru some boxes my parents had given me... I was amazed to find sooo much family history! Tons of photos from long ago... Like some of them on tin from the 1920s! And love letters between my grandparents...all starting out "my dearest darling sweetheart". And my parents wedding program. And military letters with orders for my grandpa. An entire stamp collection with old, old, old stamps... Never saw 1cent stamps before! A journal/diary from 1900 and earlier. This is crazy cool stuff! Maybe some day I'll have time to pull it all out and discover more! :)

Ummm...we are pretty darn thankful for two little girls that live up the street!! Went "shopping" at @nopaparazziplease's yesterday and I'm thinking Ellie's summer shoe selection will do! ;) The saddest part... I actually bought Ellie a brand new pair of the cutest shoes ever... And guess which pair the puppy would decide to chew... Ugh! Nevertheless... We had a lot of fun spring cleaning Elle's closet this morning! :)

At Zay's checkup a few weeks ago, he failed his eye exam, so we had to go in for another. Found out our boy is a bit farsighted... Doc said we aren't going to rush into glasses right now, but they are likely in his future when he begins reading, etc. And would it surprise you that he's also already been pegged for needing braces too! He has a pretty significant cross bite that hasn't improved at all and is moving his baby teeth! I mean, seriously! Can this kid catch a break??? Poor guy! SUPER proud of my Zay-man though! He takes everything in stride and ALWAYS has a smile on his face! He was thrilled with his 'special sunglasses' after his exam! Couldn't ask for a better boy!!! :)

Public speaking is totally not my thing... But my kids are definitely my thing! So when asked to speak to a UofI class on the newborn screening and PKU... The answer is yes! This is the second year speaking to this class and I'm always impressed with the student's thoughtful questions! And a bonus...I get to tour the state hygienic lab, which is so educational! The benefits of living in this country and more particularly, in Iowa is a huge blessing... Public health is probably something we all should take a little more time to fully understand!

Yesterday my dear husband grabbed his cell phone on the way out of the house, and then grabbed my cell phone too... He had 2 phones, I had zero. Honestly, it was great! I secretly loved a day of being unplugged... No one could reach me... No distractions... Made for a quiet day! Today I've got my phone and I like it this way too! I mean, how else am I going to take a photo of my cute lunch date!!! :)

Today Zay had a check up with his endocrinologist and we had a conference with his teachers! Sure seems like yesterday when we took our 6 day old baby to UofI for the first time and started figuring out how to manage 2 genetic disorders! And now we get to talk with his teachers and hear how great he's doing at school and what a kind little boy he is. So proud of all this kid has overcome in his 5 short years of life!!! Love you Zay-Zay!!
